Perth Speakers Club (Formerly Perth Toastmasters Club) was formed in 1972 and was a founder member of the Association of Speakers Clubs. It had previously been Perth Toastmasters Club formed in 1954, part of a worldwide organisation known as Toastmasters International, but in 1972 many of the British members of Toastmasters International broke away from their American parent to form the Association of Speakers Clubs or ASC as it is more commonly known. There are now over 100 individual Speakers Clubs throughout Britain.
The principal aims of ASC are to promote, advise and encourage high standards of public speaking by providing a relaxed atmosphere to allow individuals to gain confidence, practice their speaking skills and receive constructive feedback and encouragement from more experienced speakers. (The word “criticism” is avoided:speakers’ efforts are evaluated, never criticised) and experienced speakers are encouraged to come along to meetings to offer advice to those less experienced. Over the years hundreds of people from all walks of life and from all age groups have benefited from membership of ASC.
Perth Speakers Club, and its sister clubs in the area of Perth and Kinross, give individuals the opportunity to gain confidence, experience and practice in all facets of public speaking, be it delivering prepared speeches within time limits, chairing and conducting business and public meetings, debating, making impromptu speeches, even the relatively straightforward task of proposing a vote of thanks.
From its earliest days, many Perthshire business people, professionals, police officers, teachers, farmers, tradespeople, local government staff and sales people have attended the Club. Many pupils in their final years at school have come along to gain confidence in speaking at job interviews. A surprising number of individuals have also returned later in their careers because they enjoy the banter, the entertainment and friendships formed at club meetings.
